Podcasting Caught In the Clutches…
…of the almighty dollar.
So it seems like Curry’s PodShow folks and the organizers of the Podcast and Portable Media Expo are fighting it out in the press. There’s even talk about PodShow going out and starting a competing Expo across the street. But it’s no surprise. Because Podcasting is so (relatively) new, everyone out there seems to think they can own all of it. At least that’s how they’re acting.
Folks… this thing is bigger than all of us. We all need to take a big step back and accept that the pie is going to get sliced up, the direction is going to be decided by everyone involved, and some things may happen that piss some of us off. That’s the beauty of it. It’s free, and it will stay that way. I don’t mean monetarily free, of course, I mean free to grow… and change.
We’re all going to get our piece of the pie… or not… depending on our OWN actions. Just because the Podcast expo is being run by someone else doesn’t mean that PodShow should be throwing rocks or having rocks thrown at them. Everyone can co-exist and compete at the same time without it getting downright ugly. Look at how the Macintosh industry evolved. There’s Macworld expo… you might remember that name from one of the big magazines, right? Well, MacAddict still shows up at the show, and yeah, they throw their own parties. Hell, The Mac Observer shows up, too, and we throw our own kick-ass party, but that doesn’t mean we don’t invite the folks from Macworld to it. In fact, they’re the *first* people we invite, because we’re all stuck in this industry together and, more than that, they’ve become our friends. They know they can’t own 100% of the eyeballs out there, and we know the same damned thing.
Let’s hope the folks in Podcasting figure it out. Or maybe we’ll just have to teach them. In fact, yours truly is speaking in room 107 on Friday afternoon at 2:00 talking about advertising in podcasts… after all, that’s where the money comes from, and money is the root of all evil, right? Maybe I’ll be doing more educating than I thought. Yes, that’s right, we at BackBeat Media share in that same pie. More to come…

Very well said. This is ludicrous. How can anyone think they need to throw a party across the street?
If Adam Curry wants to be heralded by the masses as the God he likes to portray his self-image as being, then he should simply tell his people to follow him, embrace the PaPME and then throw an additional party (as it wouldn’t be an Expo at all no doubt) sometime later.
This would mean two promotions of a growing and successful platform, not a quarreling bunch of school children who cry and decide to drink alcho-pops behind the bike sheds instead of going into the communal disco.
